Schmalz vacuum clamping systems permit decisive improvements in the efficiency and productivity of CNC woodworking centres. The set-up times can be reduced greatly with the aid of vacuum clamping systems. This is a great benefit where many different parts are produced in decreasing quantities, since it helps to reduce the production costs. In spite of all the benefits of vacuum clamping systems, however, there are still many wooden or plastic parts with complex shapes which cannot be clamped with vacuum or can be clamped only with difficulty.
Mechanical clamps for all Schmalz clamping systems
For this reason, Schmalz has developed a range of mechanical clamps for workpieces made of wood or plastic. These are available in various types and versions and are compatible with all Schmalz vacuum clamping systems. The mechanical clamps can be used on the following types of machine tables: 2-circuit console system with Schmalz suction blocks (100 mm or 50 mm high), 1-circuit console system (in this case, the mechanical clamps are pre-fixed with a separate vacuum connection), smooth table or slotted table with slot spacings of 30x30 mm and 50x50 mm. Furthermore, the mechanical clamps can be combined with the retrofittable Innospann system from Schmalz with the base-plate Steel-Plate or Steel-Plate-T.
Individual clamping solutions from a modular system
The mechanical clamps have the same height as the Schmalz suction blocks. They can thus be used alone or together with suction blocks. The modular system permits the user to create a clamping solution which is perfectly matched to the workpiece to be machined. The large number of different clamps makes it easy to create individual clamping arrangements. If necessary, these can be converted quickly to match new workpieces. Just like the suction blocks, the mechanical clamps can be positioned quickly and easily. They are held in position by vacuum, by magnets or by placing them in the slots on the machine table. The workpieces are then clamped by means of vacuum, which means that a separate supply of compressed-air is not needed.
Flexible clamping of difficult workpieces
When using mechanical clamps, the user needs only a short time for positioning and adjustment, thanks to the adjustable clamping range of 12 to 80 mm (with larger ranges available on request) and the fact that the upper clamping plate can be rotated and turned over as necessary. The maximum clamping force of each clamp is up to 700 N and guarantees precise machining of the workpieces. Even narrow or curved workpieces can be clamped securely and reliably.
Construction of the mechanical clamps
Each mechanical clamp has a base plate to suit the type of machine table, an aluminium clamping body, a hard-wearing friction coating on the clamping surface and threaded spindle for adjustment of the clamping range.
