The handling of unwieldy and, depending on their size, heavy sheets of plastic and other materials frequently represents a challenge to the employees of the companies producing these sheets and of the companies who need to cut the sheets to size. The handling tasks comprise the removal of the sheets from the production system, stacking them for storage and transport, removing them from the stack, placing them on the sawing machine and then stacking the finished parts on a pallet or a transport trolley. If this work is done by a single person without suitable handling equipment, damage to the workpieces and injuries to the person concerned are almost inevitable, and both of these cost money. There are two possible solutions to this problem: the use of suitably qualified and responsible persons for handling the workpieces and the provision of suitable handling equipment to make the work easier. This latter option increases motivation and thus also improves the productivity and the throughput. Further cost savings result from the improved quality and the fact that less reworking of the parts is necessary.

How should one handle sheets and similar objects?

The vacuum specialists J. Schmalz GmbH in 722293 Glatten have the answer to the question as to how and with which equipment such plastic sheets can be handled and transported efficiently in the rough operating conditions of a factory: their comprehensive spectrum of vacuum tube lifters of the Jumbo range. These are characterised by the fact that they use a vacuum to grip the workpieces and also to raise and lower them. The Jumbo range is a modular system of vacuum handling devices, each of which consists of a vacuum generator, a feed hose, the lifting and operating unit and the appropriate vacuum gripper. The vacuum tube lifter can be mounted on a wall or column slewing crane or on an overhead monorail crane system. It is also possible to mount it directly over a work position or on a mobile frame. There are various models of the vacuum tube lifters: the JUMBOHANDY for loads of 20 or 30 kg and the JUMBOERGO and JUMBOSPRINT for loads of 35 to 300 kg. The version JUMBOSPRINT differs from the other models in that it has a shorter, centred operating handle.

Vacuum tube lifters can handle (almost) anything!

Messrs. Helber Holztechnik GmbH in 72221 Haiterbach were looking for a solution for the loading of heavy plastic sheets on a sawing machine and were quickly convinced by the advantages of handling with a vacuum. These special plastic sheets are used for the manufacture of panels in switchgear cabinets and have to be cut to the size of the cabinet in which they are to be installed. For some time now, the company has been using a vacuum tube lifter JUMBOERGO 140. Since the sheets are always handled horizontally as they are moved from the stack to the horizontal sawing machine, there was no need for a swivelling unit, which meant that vacuum handling system was simpler. The raw plastic sheets weigh up to 140 kg, and the JUMBOERGO 140 with this maximum load-carrying capacity was therefore selected for the task. With the exception of the longer operating handle, the lifter is a standard devices which was assembled quickly and economically from the modular system. The sequence of operations is as follows. The worker lifts a sheet of plastic from the stack with the vacuum tube lifter and then traverses the lifter with a monorail crane to the table of the sawing machine. He places the sheet on the table and parks the vacuum tube lifter to one side, but within easy reach, until it is needed again. This ensures that the entire working area is clear. The special, longer operating handle permits the worker to handle the unwieldy and heavy plastic sheets easily, safely and precisely. In contrast to handling with mechanical grippers, handling the sheets with vacuum ensures that they are not damaged. The entire handling operation, for which two or more persons were needed in the past, can now be carried out by a single person. The reduced personnel costs and the lower risk of injuries to persons and damage to the workpieces mean that the vacuum tube lifter will pay for itself in a relatively short time.
