The company was first certified in accordance with DIN ISO 9001 as long ago as 1994.

We have since successfully passed two recertification inspections.

Furthermore, the Schmalz environmental management system was validated in accordance with the EU Eco-Audit regulations (EMAS) and certified in accordance with DIN ISO 14001 in 1997. We are thus one of the few companies in belonging to the Chamber of Trade for the region "North Black Forest" which have both certificates and are thus a registered site in accordance with the EU Eco-Audit regulations.

Certification for data-processing systems

Schmalz subjected their entire IT structure to an inspection in accordance with the Guidelines of the BSI (Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik - Federal Office for Security in Information Technology) and have thus taken the first important step towards certification, namely that of publishing a declaration.

The objective of Schmalz is to achieve full certification of their IT, which is similar to the certification in accordance with DIN ISO 9001.

Our future-oriented principles and our sense of responsibility for persons and nature soon resulted in the inclusion of environmental protection in our thoughts and actions. The basis for the environmental protection in the company is the quality and environmental policy laid down in our Environmental Declaration.

Environmental protection in the sector of energy generation has a long tradition at J. Schmalz GmbH and is today the symbol for protection of the environment in our company. Regenerative sources of energy such as wind and water, solar energy and replaceable raw materials (wood chips) are widely used. The company generates enough power for its own requirements and , in 2000, even achieved a surplus of more than 800,000 kWh.

The exemplary work of J. Schmalz GmbH in the area of environmental protection were rewarded with the "Environmental Prize for Business 2000" of the state of Baden-Württemberg in the industrial sector.
 
In June 2004, Schmalz won the BDI Environmental Prize and the Green Week Award of the ICEO. Schmalz received these two renowned awards for their efforts towards protection of the environment in all parts of the company.

In addition, Dr. Kurt Schmalz and Wolfgang Schmalz, the two managing directors of Schmalz, received the prize "Ecological Manager 2004" in November 2004.

With this prize, the initiators, the magazine CAPITAL and the environmental foundation WWF Deutschland, rewarded the excellent efforts of the employees and management of J. Schmalz GmbH in the sector of environmental protection.

European Solar Prize 2007 awarded to J. Schmalz GmbH

The award of the European Solar Prize 2007 in the category "Owners or operators of systems for utilisation of renewable energy" honours the company's great and successful efforts to become a "positive-energy company".
The prize, which was received by the managing directors Dr. Kurt Schmalz and Wolfgang Schmalz, is regarded as a special confirmation of their strategic aim of sustainable business practices.

The initiative for setting up the ecological guided tour resulted from the manifold measures implemented in the company for protection of the environment and the related benefits for both private persons and other companies. The objective of this free tour is to demonstrate the various possibilities and to inform the participants of what can be done. Furthermore, the guided tour is intended to supply ideas for other interested companies and to encourage them to follow our lead.

The programme starts with a presentation about the production of regenerative energy and the measures implemented in the company for the protection of the environment. This is followed by the actual guided tour through the various departments in the Schmalz headquarters and production facility in Glatten. During this tour, the participants can experience the environmental protection measures directly and receive additional background information in the form of models and placards. Further information about specific subjects is available at any time. On request, it is also possible to visit the company's own wind generators.
